Make Plans, Change Plans
For each of these women, the power of sports and timing has been a unique journey.
Kate was clearly a talented high school and college athlete, but she did not necessarily plan to run professionally until a decision to travel while at Yale gave her a different perspective on time. Rather than immediately pursue the typical job route, Kate recognized a chance to see what it was like to compete against professional runners.
âI thought, âI can train for the Trials,ââ said Kate. âIt wasnât like âOh, Iâm going to go and become a professional runner for the next ten years,â it was like having to train for six months.â
Not planning too far in advance has served Kate well, even when she turned pro.
In fact, being able to adjust their individual goals and purposes has benefited all of them. Julia recognized her talent for running almost a decade later than Kate, but is chasing a parallel goal just the same: to run her best race. Julia cannot have tunnel vision because she is a solicitor, wife, and mother of two children. Kate must build for her future as a professional athlete. At some point, she will need to decide when it will be her time to switch professional gears.
Kelly faced repeated setbacks both physically and emotionally throughout her athletic career. Like Kate and Julia, Kelly chose to return from injury to sport, repeatedly. Given how little research exists on the side effects of birth control pills, Kelly must rely more on her intuition and her knowledge of her own body to guide her recovery.
Maura and I are committed to using life lessons learned in sports to help create future leaders in young, women athletes. We did not learn those lessons in our own competitive days, but instead, they came because of experiences deeper into our educational careers.
Whether or not you believe in fate or predetermination, it does not matter. For there is one important lesson from these stories, and that is timing can change how we approach life.
Each of these women developed an endless ability to set and reset goals. They know there is purpose in the lonely runs and in the lousy runs. It just takes time to figure out what that purpose is.
